Brass Studies at the University of Buffalo

The UB Brass Area provides students with a diverse and comprehensive education in Brass Studies. Through the study of fundamental brass techniques and the performance of literature ranging from the Renaissance to Modern, students receive training that prepares them for professional opportunities, and further study at the graduate level.

At UB, students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of ensembles, frequently collaborating with faculty and guest performers who are internationally recognized for their landmark contributions to brass music. Students also participate in masterclasses, performances of works by student composers, and frequently join faculty in recording
projects.

Those who enter the Mus.B. program have the opportunity to pursue a Minor in Music Education, which will assist them in an accelerated process toward Permanent Education Certification and a Master’s Degree.

Students may also pursue a Double Major in Music and the academic area of their choice. Bachelor’s and Master’s studies in Music Performance, also available with Permanent Music Education Certification

Substantial scholarships are available, based on auditions, academic accomplishment, and need.

I would like to invite young brass players to consider the UB Music Department for their
college study. We have been working to build an atmosphere for students that is creative,
collaborative, and challenging, so that our graduates can be prepared for the exciting world
of music that awaits them.

For further information about the UB Music Department, and the Brass Area, students may
contact me via email at jrnelson@buffalo.edu. I look forward to meeting all of you.
