Historical Musicology

Students in Historical Musicology at the University at Buffalo will encounter a wide variety of course options offered by a diverse, energetic faculty.  Specialties cover several major periods of Western music history, including medieval and Renaissance music, as well as the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.  Areas of interest also encompass:  film music, Country-Western Music, the Second Viennese School, criticism, philosophy, aesthetics, and popular music studies.  The department provides a good environment for exploring and pursuing the many avenues open within music scholarship today, and affords a strong foundation for numerous career paths in music. One of UB's greatest resources, and fundamental to all of our degree programs (including the highly successful joint M.A./M.L.S.) is the music library, conveniently located on site in the music building.  In addition to more standard holdings, the music library possesses unusually strong collections in the areas of jazz, rare editions, and contemporary music (including related graphic arts).  The strong contemporary music presence and theory faculty at UB also ensures a lively, interdisciplinary community of composers, performers, and scholars.

Degree Programs

The Department offers two graduate degrees in musicology: the Ph.D. in Music Theory and Historical Musicology (students may specialize in either area), and a Master of Arts in Musicology. There are several options for fellowships, teaching assistantships and graduate awards available to the prospective graduate student.

All application materials should arrive before January 1 to ensure full consideration for fellowship and/or assistantship awards.
