A Music Department for the 21st Century

The University at Buffalo Department of Music offers performers, scholars, and composers a stimulating and exciting environment in which to develop their talents.  The department is a showcase for world-renowned performing artists and composers, and for prominent professors of music theory and history.  This vigorous tradition provides a unique opportunity for creative performance experience and scholarly excellence.   Our undergraduate and graduate programs in Composition, Historical Musicology, Music Theory,  Music Librarianship, and Music Performance attract students from across the globe, and our alumni have gone on to pursue thriving careers in North America and abroad.

Our department presents over 125 public performances each year as a extension of the academic program.  Contemporary music plays an important role in the activity of the department, allowing music students a unique opportunity to start their careers on music's leading edge.  A low faculty-to-student ratio and extensive individual instruction allows students to achieve their highest potential.

Music Department students also reap the benefits of the resources of the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York's most comprehensive university center, with a diverse community of 23,000 students pursuing their interests from more than 100 undergraduate programs, 60 minors, and over 200 master's and doctoral-level programs.  Furthermore, Western New York has a rich tradition of cultural activity, including the outstanding Albright-Knox Art Museum, The Buffalo Philharmonic, and active arts communities in jazz and improvised music, film, poetry, and drama.
