About the Institute

The Harold Rosenbaum Choral Conducting Institute was established in 2014 to provide choral conductors with an opportunity for growth. The institute offers workshops sponsored by the music departments at Columbia University, Wesleyan University, Queens College, Adelphi University, and the University at Buffalo. These workshops are open to choral conductors from around the world who wish to enhance their careers, expand their contacts and have an intensive experience with Dr. Harold Rosenbaum, one of the world's leading choral conductors.

The workshops are limited to 12 conductors so that each participant will receive close attention and hands-on guidance. Each attendee will receive a private lesson, plus opportunities to rehearse the institute's choir while receiving constructive feedback by Dr. Rosenbaum. In addition, there will be sessions devoted to the study of scores and interpretation, diction and performance practice, and other subjects which may include the business of running a choral organization including forming a board of directors, fundraising, marketing, public relations and grant-writing.

Other topics may include when to use a baton, when to conduct recitatives, how to run rehearsals from the keyboard, singing expressively, working with soloists, how to interpret staccatos, tenutos, choral crescendos, grace notes and glissandos, the placement of singers and piano in performance, and much more. Participants receive in-depth interaction with the maestro as they learn the intricacies of choral conducting. Auditors pay a reduced tuition and are welcome to attend any events during the week. Singers who wish to participate in the Institute Choir beginning on the third day pay no tuition.

Certificates for Professional Development will be sent to active participants upon request.
