Wind Chamber Music Program
The recently created Wind
Chamber Music Program is designed to suit the needs of music
performance majors and minors. Smaller instrumental ensembles
are created, giving players more opportunities to work in chamber
music groups. Rather than duplicate the UB Concert Band, the
Wind Chamber Music Program strives to provide students with a
unique performance outlet. Chamber groups could include,
but would not be limited to: brass quintet, woodwind quintet,
trumpet ensemble, saxophone quartet, large brass ensemble, and
various mixed ensembles. There will also be guests from time
to time who will teach and lecture on various topics which will
assist students in their development as performers.
A message from Jon Nelson, director of the UB Wind Ensemble and Wind Chamber Music Program ... I have a great interest in chamber music, having made my career as a chamber music performer for fifteen years. I fully realize that chamber music skills are crucial to a young musician's education. My experience in this area is substantial: I have led the Meridian Arts Ensemble for eleven years through residencies in the US and abroad, international tours, and recording projects. I have been Artist in Residence of Chamber Music at Boston University, and was Co-Director of the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar at Boston University's Tanglewood Institute in the summer of 1999. For me, chamber music has been a most rewarding and enjoyable experience, and I am eager for students at UB to share in this. Audition Information Auditions are held in the fall, and ensembles are assembled according to what instrumentalists are available. Groups are assigned repertoire, and they are expected to rehearse at least once per week on their own, in addition to their scheduled coaching session.
