History of the UB Sax Ensemble:

The Saxophone Ensemble at the State University of New York at Buffalo began in the early 1970s via student efforts to assemble a variety of ad hoc trios, quartets and larger ensembles as neeeded for recitals, University events, et cetera, ad libitum. In 1980 the UB Saxophone Ensemble was offered to students for academic credit. The instrumentation comprises any complement of saxophones, from bass to soprano. The ensemble is directed by Edward Yadzinski and Harry Fackelman.

      Repertoire:

      • Includes original and transcribed works in print
      • Features new scores, arrangements, adaptations and transcriptions by students and faculty, all of which are added to the permanent ensemble library at SUNYAB
      • Also features new and experimental scores for expanded instrumentation, including a growing collection of music for saxophones and percussion, saxophones and synthesizers and/or digital tape

      Saxophone Studies

SUNY-Buffalo students may enroll for undergraduate or graduate applied saxophone study on the basis of curriculum: Music Education, Performance, Bachelor of Arts, non-major study, etc. All applied saxophone study is formal, with emphasis on proficiency in classical and studio techniques. Also, in keeeping with individual interest and need, students are encouraged to participate in new music ensembles, jazz ensembles, etc.

      Saxophone Resources

In addition to its fine catalog of saxophone music, the Music Library of the Department of Music has in reserve a large selection of the archival recordings (pre 1960) from private collections, including all of the major recordings by Vincent Abato, Marcel Mule (solo and quartet), Sigurd Rascher, Al Gallodoro, Rudy Wiedoft and Freddy Gardner. These are in addition to the many recent recordings made by other performers since 1960.
