Music Education

 

While the Department of Music does not offer degrees in music education, students with a Mus. B. in Performance or a B.A. in Music from UB may seek an Initial Teacher Certificate and/or Professional Certification through UB's Graduate School of Education to begin teaching in public schools in New York State. These tracks, and the certification areas offered via each, are as follows:

Initial Certification Only:

Mus. B. in Performance

Bachelor's degree is typically a four-year course of study and student continues into an Advanced Certificate program for initial certification.*^

Advanced Certificate Program

Typically a one-year course of study including coursework and student teaching.

Result

Recommendation for Initial Teacher Certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. Student is then required to complete an Ed.M. in Music Education within five years to be recommended for Professional Certification.

Initial and Professional Certification:

Mus. B. in Performance

Bachelor's degree is typically a four-year course of study and student moves directly into the Ed.M. degree program upon graduation.*^

Ed.M. in Music Education

Master's degree is typically a two-year course of study. Includes all coursework and student teaching.

Result

Recommendation for both Initial and Professional Teacher Certificates issued by the New York State Education Department.
